Inside or outside is the other half of the question

Swarmers are weak, short-range fliers drawn to light. A handful found on an exterior windowsill or on a patio may simply have flown in from a neighboring property or a tree. A swarm that clearly emerged from inside — from a wall, a ceiling fixture, a door frame, or a windowsill on an upper floor — is a different matter, because it means the colony producing them is already in or against your structure. Note where you found them before you clean up.

Southern California has two termite groups worth distinguishing, and their swarm behavior differs. Western drywood termites live entirely inside the wood they infest, need no soil contact, and typically swarm on warm afternoons from late summer through autumn — which is why eaves, fascia, window frames, and attic framing are the usual sites. Subterranean termites nest in soil and reach the structure through mud tubes; they generally swarm during daylight in the cooler, wetter part of the year, often within a day or two of rain.

What to do with what you found

Swarmers cause no damage themselves, so there is no urgency in the next ten minutes. There is real value in the next few days.

Does a swarm mean the damage is already severe?

It means the colony is mature enough to reproduce, which takes years — so it is not a brand-new arrival. It does not tell you how much damage there is, because that depends on where the colony is and what it has been eating. That is what an inspection determines.

What are the little piles of sawdust-looking pellets?

Almost certainly drywood termite frass. It is uniform, sand-like, six-sided under magnification, and accumulates below the small round kick-out holes the termites push it through. Unlike genuine sawdust it is very consistent in size, and it reappears after you sweep it up.
