Fire Ants

Fire ants are genuinely worth taking seriously. When their mound is disturbed they swarm and sting repeatedly, delivering a sharp, burning sensation that typically leaves itchy red welts or small blisters. Children playing on the lawn and curious pets are most at risk because they can stumble onto a mound before noticing it. Most stings are painful but minor, though some people react more strongly. If anyone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction, seek medical care right away.

Fire ant mounds are large, irregular domes of loose dirt with no clear opening on top, since the ants enter and exit through underground tunnels rather than a central hole. They tend to appear in open, sunny, well-watered areas of the lawn or landscape. The ants themselves are reddish-brown to blackish and come in noticeably different sizes within the same colony. The clearest tell is their reaction: disturb the mound and they pour out fast and sting.

Store-bought sprays and pouring treatments over a mound often kill only surface foragers while the queen survives and rebuilds, and they can prompt the colony to relocate. Effective control pairs slow-acting baits the ants carry down to the queen with targeted mound treatments, applied in the right sequence. Because fire ants recolonize from neighboring properties, a licensed technician on a recurring program is the most dependable way to clear them and keep a Southern California yard protected over time.
